Manchester United’s crisis deepened on Sunday after they suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, raising fresh questions about manager Michael Carrick’s future.
The defeat extended United’s winless run to eight matches and left them 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.
Carrick’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench backfired as goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson secured a deserved victory for Bournemouth manager Marco Rose.
It was the third time in four seasons that Bournemouth had beaten United 3-0 at Old Trafford.
Fernandes had criticised Carrick’s tactics following United’s 4-1 defeat to Champions League debutants Como on Wednesday.
Although Carrick insisted that dropping the Portuguese midfielder was a footballing decision, Fernandes remained on the bench throughout Sunday’s match, fuelling speculation that the decision was linked to their reported disagreement.
Bournemouth supporters taunted Carrick with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” as United struggled to respond to the visitors’ dominance.
However, another managerial dismissal may not be enough to address the club’s deeper problems, given United’s dramatic decline since former manager Alex Ferguson retired 13 years ago.
Carrick’s impressive interim spell last season helped United secure third place in the Premier League, although their lack of European and domestic cup commitments contributed to that strong finish.
United have managed just two victories in 12 matches across all competitions this season, against newly promoted Ipswich Town and Azerbaijani side Sabah.
Bournemouth arrived at Old Trafford below United in the league standings following a difficult start to the campaign under Rose.
However, just three days after defeating AC Milan 3-0, the Cherries produced another commanding performance against one of European football’s biggest clubs.
Bournemouth Punish United’s Defensive Errors
Bournemouth took the lead in the 38th minute when Rayan connected cleanly with Justin Kluivert’s free-kick to beat the United defence.
The visitors doubled their advantage five minutes later after Leny Yoro stumbled under pressure from Adrien Truffert. The Bournemouth defender then squared the ball for Tavernier, who tapped it into an empty net.
Despite United’s disappointing first-half display, many supporters expected Fernandes to enter the match after the break. However, the captain remained on the bench as the hosts continued to struggle.
Bournemouth thought they had scored a third within the first minute of the second half when Evanilson found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The reprieve did little to change the momentum, as the visitors continued to create opportunities.
United goalkeeper Senne Lammens denied Rayan before the Brazilian winger fired wide after getting past Lisandro Martinez.
Evanilson eventually scored Bournemouth’s third goal 20 minutes from time, rounding Lammens before curling an impressive finish into the net from a tight angle.
The goal sealed a comprehensive victory for the visitors and intensified the frustration among United supporters.
United Fans Turn on Club Owners
As the match approached its conclusion, United supporters directed their anger towards the club’s unpopular owners, the Glazer family, rather than focusing solely on Carrick.
The manager applauded the Stretford End and touched his chest as he walked towards the tunnel at the final whistle.
However, Carrick could still face the consequences of another disappointing performance as the 20-time English champions continue to struggle for consistency.
With United languishing just above the relegation zone and their winless run stretching to eight matches, pressure is mounting on the manager to turn the situation around.
