A post on the X account of Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has appealed for a fair trial for him after more than eight months in detention.

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since 19 February, following his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former governor is facing several charges, including allegations of money laundering and conversion of public property.

He is also standing trial in a separate case involving a five-count amended charge filed by the Department of State Services (DSS). The charges relate to allegations that he unlawfully intercepted telephone conversations linked to Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser.

The post, published on El-Rufai’s X account on Friday, said he was entitled to a fair trial.

“Today Exactly 256 days @elrufai in Detention,” the post reads.

“A Human Right, Not a Favor A fair trial is not an act of mercy. It is not a privilege. It is a fundamental human right.”

The post tagged several accounts belonging to foreign leaders, international organisations and multilateral institutions.

Those mentioned included US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron, the United Nations, the African Union and the European Parliament.

It also tagged international media organisations, including CNN, BBC, The Economist and The Washington Post.

The appeal came days after a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed El-Rufai’s no-case submission in the case concerning the alleged unlawful interception of telephone conversations.
