Nigerian international Taiwo Awoniyi found the net as Frank Lampard’s Coventry City defeated Sunderland to move out of the Premier League relegation zone, leaving the visitors at the bottom of the table.

Coventry took the lead in the 17th minute through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto after Sunderland failed to clear a cross. Awoniyi extended the advantage in the 37th minute, dispossessing Luke O’Nien before driving through the defence and firing a shot that deflected into the net.

Jack Rudoni added Coventry’s third goal seven minutes into the second half, with his effort taking a deflection off Omar Alderete. Sunderland responded in the 67th minute when Enzo Le Fée converted a penalty awarded following a VAR review for handball by Ethan Pinnock, but the visitors were unable to fight their way back into the game.

Sunderland’s difficult afternoon worsened in stoppage time when Alderete received a second yellow card and was sent off. The defeat marked Sunderland’s sixth loss in nine league matches.
