Why I’d swap next Ballon d’Or for Champions League triumph – Harry Kane

Harry Kane has revealed that he would gladly give up another Ballon d’Or award in exchange for winning the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich.

The England captain claimed his first Ballon d’Or title last week, finishing ahead of Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal to secure the prestigious individual award.

At 33 years and 90 days, Kane became the fourth-oldest player to win the Ballon d’Or for the first time. He trails Stanley Matthews, who won it at 41 years and 321 days in 1956, Karim Benzema at 34 years and 302 days in 2022, and Lev Yashin at 34 years and 56 days in 1963.

Kane enjoyed an outstanding 2025-26 campaign, scoring 61 goals across all competitions, 19 more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues. His tally was also the highest recorded by a player in a single season since Cristiano Ronaldo scored the same number for Real Madrid in 2014-15.

Bayern Munich reached the Champions League semi-finals last season but suffered a 6-5 aggregate defeat to eventual champions Paris Saint-Germain.

Kane scored 14 goals in the 2025-26 Champions League campaign, setting a record for the highest number of goals scored by an English player in a single European Cup season since the competition began in 1955.

The striker has also found the net in each of his last 10 appearances in the competition.

Bayern are among the leading contenders for this season’s Champions League title, with the Opta supercomputer giving them a 15.8 per cent chance of winning the competition, placing them second behind Arsenal’s 22.7 per cent.

Despite his individual success, Kane has made it clear that lifting Europe’s biggest club trophy with Bayern would mean more to him than securing another personal accolade.

“I think I’d swap the next Ballon d’Or for a Champions League triumph,” said Kane.

“The team aspect of the sport is why we all play. Of course, winning the Ballon d’Or was one of the greatest moments of my life. But winning with Bayern – that would be an absolutely incredible feeling.

“And once you’ve won the Ballon d’Or, it’s something really special. We all want to reach the Champions League final and achieve that great success as a team.

“At the moment, I’m still in with a chance of winning both.”
