Imo fixes November 14 for Local Government poll

The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has fixed Saturday, November 14, 2026, as the new date for the postponed local government council elections across the state’s 27 local government areas.

The announcement was contained in a press release signed by the commission’s Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, following consultations with key stakeholders, including the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and registered political parties, on Tuesday in Owerri.

According to the commission, the decision followed a stakeholders’ meeting held over the weekend, where participants urged ISIEC to announce a new election date as soon as possible.

The election was initially scheduled for September 26, 2026, but was postponed after some members of IPAC approached the judiciary to seek an extension of the electoral timetable.

ISIEC later rescheduled the poll to November 7 but postponed it again on October 31 following consultations with political parties and other stakeholders.

The commission did not announce a new date at the time.

It explained that the earlier proposed date of November 7 was considered unrealistic, making it necessary to move the election to November 14.

The statement read, “The elections will produce 27 Local Government Council Chairmen and 305 Councillors across the state.”

ISIEC also directed the leadership of all registered political parties to visit its headquarters to collect the official election timetable and guidelines.

The commission said it was ready to observe the primary elections of political parties for chairmanship and councillorship candidates in line with applicable electoral laws.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful, transparent, free and credible elections, ISIEC assured political parties, aspirants and voters of a level playing field.

It said the process would ensure the emergence of democratically elected administrations at the grassroots.

The commission also appealed for the understanding and cooperation of all stakeholders towards the successful conduct of the November 14 council elections.
