The has announced the successful rescue of nine worshippers who were kidnapped during a midnight prayer gathering at Saint John Catholic Church in the Ojije area of Utonkon community, Ado Local Government Area.
In a statement released by the Governor’s Technical Adviser on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication, Solomon Iorpev, Governor praised security personnel for their prompt action. He described the operation as a “significant breakthrough.”
The governor reassured residents that security agencies, working alongside local vigilante groups, would sustain efforts to tackle kidnapping and prevent a recurrence. He also appealed to the public to share credible information that could aid in tracking down criminal elements.
Following the abduction and other incidents in Benue South, Governor Alia convened a high-level security meeting on February 13, 2026, at the Palace of the Och’Idoma in Otukpo. The meeting, attended by the Idoma Traditional Council and senior security officials, ended with a directive for the immediate rescue of the victims.
Abduction
The nine worshippers were taken by gunmen during a church vigil last Sunday, creating tension within the community. A former councillor representing Ukwuenyo Ward, Emmanuel Udah, confirmed the incident, describing it as “a targeted and planned crime against the Church,” and noted that residents were deeply shaken and fearful. He urged authorities to reinforce security, warning that repeated attacks have left communities feeling neglected.
Earlier, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, confirmed that nine individuals had been abducted. She stated that the Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, deployed tactical units in collaboration with local vigilantes to pursue the attackers and secure the victims’ freedom, adding that investigations are still ongoing.
