Mid term polls: Democrats win control of US House, close in on Senate after victories in Republican strongholds

The Democratic Party has secured a majority in the US House of Representatives and recorded significant victories in its efforts to regain control of the Senate, following wins in traditionally Republican strongholds according to BBC.

The results mark a major political breakthrough for Democrats and could have far-reaching implications for President Donald Trump, whose party stands to lose its influence in the House.

In Texas, Democratic candidate James Talarico secured the party’s first Senate victory in the state in decades, marking a significant upset.

Describing the outcome as a potentially historic night for Democrats, the party’s victories have raised hopes of a broader shift in the balance of power in Congress.

Reacting to the election results, Trump sought to distance himself from the Republican Party’s setbacks, writing on social media, “I wasn’t on the ballot and if I was, we would have won in a landslide!”

The president’s remarks appeared to shift responsibility for the disappointing Republican performance away from himself, a move that could spark further tensions within the party.

The midterm elections featured contests for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats, as well as several state-level positions, including governorships.
