Immigration suspends Lagos-Seme border comptrollers over alleged extortion

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended the senior officers in charge of the Lagos-Seme border commands following allegations of extortion involving personnel along the route.

In a statement issued on Friday, NIS spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi said the action followed online reports accusing some immigration officers operating on the Lagos-Seme corridor of misconduct “bordering on extortion”.

According to the statement, Comptroller-General of Immigration Kemi Nandap has “temporarily relieved the Comptrollers in charge of the affected Commands of their duties” while investigations into the allegations continue.

Akinlabi said Nandap strongly condemned the reported behaviour, describing it as “unacceptable” and contrary to the service’s ethical principles, values, and operational standards.

He added that the investigation would be thorough, with the aim of identifying every officer involved and ensuring “appropriate disciplinary measures are applied with immediate effect”.

“The Service wishes to reassure the general public, that it remains committed to delivering professional, transparent, and efficient services at all points of entry and exit,” the statement added.

“It will not condone any act that undermines public trust or tarnishes the integrity of the Service.”

The NIS also called on Nigerians to continue reporting misconduct by its officers through official complaint channels, including its social media platforms and 24-hour contact centre lines.

Akinlabi noted that the agency is strengthening its internal monitoring systems to maintain accountability and improve service delivery.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its mission to serve with integrity, discipline, and professionalism while facilitating lawful migration,” he added.
