JAPA: US introduces $750 fast-track visa interview service for B1/B2 applicants

The US State Department has introduced a “premium” expedited service for travellers applying for B1/B2 visas, allowing applicants to pay $750 for interview slots scheduled within 10 business days.

In a notice published on June 9 in the federal register, the department said the fast-tracked interview appointments will only be available at selected embassies and consulates.

The pilot programme is set to run from July 1 to December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension.

The move is part of broader adjustments to immigration and travel policies introduced under the Donald Trump administration aimed at reducing migration flows.

A number of African nationals, including Nigerians, already face potential requirements of paying bonds of up to $15,000 as part of B1/B2 visa applications.

African countries also account for a large share of nations currently affected by partial US travel restrictions.

The tightening measures have led to longer waiting periods for visa interviews, making urgent or last-minute travel more difficult for applicants.

In Abuja, the average waiting time for a B1/B2 visa interview is now about 11.5 months.

The B1/B2 (business and tourism) visa currently costs $185, with the expedited service fee charged separately.

However, the department clarified that paying for the “optional premium add-on service” does not guarantee visa approval.

The State Department also did not disclose which US diplomatic missions would participate in the programme.

It was previously reported that nearly 50 US embassies and consulates handling visa applications across Africa may be reduced to about 20.
