Jigawa Gov frees 12 inmates in celebration of Eid al-Fitr

The Governor of Jigawa State, Umar Namadi, has approved a state pardon for 12 convicted inmates as a gesture of compassion during Ramadan and ahead of the Eid al-Fitr celebration.

The pardon was granted one day before Eid al-Fitr, which Muslims around the world are set to observe on Friday, March 20, 2026.

The decision was disclosed in a statement issued by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Bello Fanini, and released to journalists on Thursday in Dutse, the state capital.

According to the statement, the action followed recommendations from the Jigawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in accordance with Section 5(1) of the relevant law.

It further stated that the pardon was carried out under Section 212(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The beneficiaries of the pardon include Ibrahim Adamu Isa, Sa’idu Umar, Adamu Musa, Habibu Musa, Yusuf Ahmed, Shu’aibu Adamu, Abdullahi Ya’u, Yahaya Jana’u, Abdul Hamisu, Garba Miko, Salisu Isa, and Aliyu Ibrahim.

Fanini said the move highlights the government’s dedication to fostering goodwill and peace.

“This act of mercy reflects our government’s dedication to reconciliation and reintegration,” he said.

He advised the pardoned individuals to uphold good conduct and refrain from any actions that could bring them back into conflict with the law.

“We expect them to reciprocate this gesture by being law-abiding citizens,” he added.

Fanini also noted that the initiative is intended to encourage reconciliation and smooth reintegration, expressing confidence that the beneficiaries will positively impact society.

He added that the government would assist in their reintegration process, including providing support to help them settle back into society.

The commissioner appealed to the public to accept the pardoned individuals and aid their return.

“We urge the community to welcome them and support their reintegration,” he said.

He further explained that the initiative aligns with global criminal justice practices that prioritise rehabilitation and reintegration.
