Opposition politicians mislead Nigerians about Tinubu’s performance — Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused opposition politicians of misrepresenting President Bola Tinubu’s performance, arguing that political differences should not prevent them from acknowledging what he described as the administration’s achievements.

Speaking at a media parley in Abuja on Tuesday, Wike said Tinubu deserved recognition for positive developments under his government, irrespective of party affiliations.

“Whether anybody likes it or not, Mr President has done well,” the minister said.

He argued that claims that the Federal Government had accomplished nothing were driven by the opposition’s quest for political power rather than an objective assessment of the administration’s record.

Wike urged politicians to avoid turning political competition into a do-or-die affair, stressing the need to distinguish constructive criticism from partisan attacks.

He cited comments attributed to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, an opposition figure, as an example of a politician acknowledging aspects of Tinubu’s performance despite belonging to a different political camp.

The FCT minister maintained that supporting the President on certain issues did not require politicians to abandon their opposition affiliations, insisting that national interests should take precedence over party loyalties.

Wike also defended the Rainbow Coalition, an alliance involving members of the All Progressives Congress and supporters of Tinubu from other political parties ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

He said the coalition was established to broaden support for the President’s re-election bid rather than eliminate political differences among its members.

The minister highlighted his efforts to mobilise support for Tinubu in the FCT and Rivers State, where competing political interests continue to shape the political landscape.

According to Wike, political leaders can demonstrate their influence by persuading their supporters to unite behind a common objective.

He added that the coalition remained open to individuals willing to support Tinubu’s re-election, regardless of their party affiliations.

With political activities gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, Wike urged Nigerians to assess Tinubu’s administration based on its record rather than partisan narratives.

He also called on voters to examine candidates’ past decisions and their management of public resources, arguing that greater accountability would help citizens make informed electoral choices and keep political campaigns focused on governance.

Wike’s comments underscore his support for Tinubu as political alignments develop ahead of the next general election, while opposition parties and other stakeholders continue to express differing views on the administration’s policies and performance.
