Osun Amotekun Chief survives gun attack

The Commander of the Osun Amotekun Corps, Adekunle Omoyele, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after being ambushed by gunmen in Osogbo on Monday night.

According to a statement issued by the corps spokesperson, Abass Yusuf, the attack occurred around 10:05 p.m. on Ikirun Road, opposite Charity Hotel, as Omoyele was driving home alone after official duties. Gunmen opened fire on his vehicle, riddling it with bullets.

Yusuf described the incident as “deeply troubling,” revealing that about 15 masked armed men also stormed Omoyele’s private residence the same night. Witnesses said the attackers arrived in a Hilux van and a Toyota Highlander SUV.

He warned that the incident highlights the growing insecurity even among those tasked with protecting the public. “This attack is not just on one individual but on the symbol of localised security structures,” Yusuf said.

The commander sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility under protective watch. The case has been reported to the Ota-Efun Police Division, and investigations are underway.

Yusuf urged residents to remain calm and report suspicious activities to security agencies for prompt action.

This development comes shortly after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, ordered a thorough investigation into the killing of several residents in Akinlalu community allegedly by Amotekun operatives, and dispatched a government delegation to assess the situation.
