Taraba Assembly speaker dumps PDP for APC ahead of Gov’s planned defection

The speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Bonzena, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His defection on Monday comes ahead of the anticipated move by Agbu Kefas, governor of Taraba, who is set to join the APC.

All principal officers in the state assembly, along with every PDP member of the legislature, switched parties alongside Bonzena.

Viral videos circulating online show the lawmakers exchanging their caps for ones featuring the insignia of President Bola Tinubu. They were also given brooms — the APC’s symbol.

In a conversation with journalists on Saturday, the governor officially confirmed his decision to dump the PDP for the ruling party.

Kefas said the move “has to do with the destiny of Taraba people”, adding that he expects a large turnout for the defection event.

“There is going to be a major shift and alignment on November 19,” he said. “I will officially transition from PDP to APC. It is a movement that has to do with the destiny of Taraba people.”

Kefas becomes the latest governor to leave the PDP for the APC in 2025, joining Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
