Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi says some bandits have told him they attack ordinary Nigerians because confronting politicians and security forces is riskier. He recounted their claims in an interview with PAPShow.
Gumi said some of the bandits were tired of the violence but feared they would be killed if they surrendered. He urged authorities to offer safe amnesty, arguing that it could help break the cycle of attacks.
He also said ransom payments were fuelling an arms race and raised the possibility that bandits were receiving weapons from abroad. Officials have not verified the remarks, which have prompted renewed public debate over how to end the violence in northern Nigeria.
