Troops dislodges armed syndicate in Benue, recovers ammunition

Troops of the Nigerian Army have dismantled an armed syndicate in Katsina-Ala LGA of Benue State, seizing ammunition and logistical materials during a raid on a hideout in the locality.

The mission was executed by sector 1 of the joint task force (JTF) operation whirl stroke after receiving intelligence about the activities of a notorious bandit leader operating from Mtan Village in Utange Council Ward of Katsina-Ala LGA.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Ahmad Zubairu, acting media information officer at the JTF headquarters, said troops moved to the site and confronted the armed suspects in a gun duel.

The army reported that the suspects abandoned the hideout following an intense exchange of fire.

“During the subsequent exploitation of the area, troops recovered two motorcycles believed to belong to the notorious bandit, eight magazines, 162 rounds of 7.62 x 39mm special ammunition, 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition, 44 rounds of 9mm ammunition, links of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and seven empty 7.62mm NATO cartridge casings,” the statement reads.

The army further disclosed that a red Toyota vehicle discovered at the location was disabled to stop its potential use for criminal purposes.

Moses Gara, force commandant of the JTF, lauded the intelligence unit for delivering prompt information that facilitated the success of the operation.

He also commended the troops for their resilience and professionalism in dealing with criminal elements.

Gara emphasised the importance of continuous cooperation between security agencies and local communities, calling on residents to keep supplying credible information to strengthen ongoing efforts against terrorism and other criminal activities in the area.
