[VIDEO]: Plateau residents defy curfew, protest deadly Palm Sunday attack in Jos

Hundreds of residents in Jos North Local Government Area defied a government-imposed curfew on Monday, taking to the streets to protest a deadly attack that occurred during Palm Sunday celebrations.

The violence, which erupted late Sunday night in Anguwan Rukuba and Gari Ya Waye communities, saw gunmen on motorcycles open fire on homes, leaving dozens dead and several others injured. Local sources estimate that the death toll may exceed 40, though official figures have yet to be confirmed.

In response to the attack, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew across Jos North, effective from Sunday night. Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack as “barbaric and unprovoked” and directed security agencies to pursue those responsible.

Despite the restrictions, residents flooded the streets on Monday morning, demanding justice and stronger protection from the state government. Videos circulating online show crowds chanting and calling for accountability, while some protesters accused security forces of failing to prevent repeated attacks in the area.

Security personnel, including the Nigeria Police Force, later moved in to disperse parts of the crowd. Reports indicate that tear gas was deployed as tensions rose, but demonstrators remained resolute in their demand for action against the attackers.

The protest highlights the growing frustration among Plateau communities who have suffered recurring cycles of violence. Jos and its environs have historically experienced communal and religious conflicts, with curfews often imposed after major incidents to prevent further bloodshed.

Families of the victims continue to mourn as residents call for decisive action to restore peace and ensure that tragedies like the Palm Sunday massacre do not recur.
