When Real Madrid confirmed the signing of Endrick three years ago, the level of expectation placed on the Brazilian prodigy was extremely high.
Seen as the next talent to follow Vinícius Junior and Rodrygo from Brazil to the Bernabéu, Endrick was widely tipped for stardom. Yet across two seasons he has struggled to earn consistent first-team chances, and he is now set to depart Madrid this winter.
On Tuesday, Madrid revealed that Endrick will join French club Lyon on a six-month loan, allowing him to develop away from the intense attention that comes with playing in the Spanish capital. Head coach Xabi Alonso will be hoping that regular match time helps the 19-year-old continue his development.
Endrick’s difficulty breaking into the Madrid squad
Endrick joined Madrid in the summer of 2024 at just 18 years old, having already scored 28 goals for Palmeiras’ senior side and demonstrated enormous potential. The club envisioned a long-term plan, easing him into the squad before handing him steady minutes in La Liga.
However, neither of his Real Madrid managers has been able to offer him much playing time. Both Carlo Ancelotti and Xabi Alonso felt unable to rely on him consistently, and the arrival of Kylian Mbappé, followed by the rise of Gonzalo García, pushed the Brazilian further down the pecking order.
Endrick now has six months to show he can succeed as a goalscoring striker in European football. Strong performances and regular goals could prompt a reassessment of his future in the summer. Still, the young forward knows that earning a place at Real Madrid is exceptionally difficult, with only elite performers securing regular chances at the Bernabéu.
