Khvicha Kvaratskhelia delivered a sensational performance with two goals and an assist as Paris Saint-Germain defeated Chelsea FC 5–2 to seize control of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Chelsea, managed by Liam Rosenior, must now overturn a three-goal deficit in the return leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday after Kvaratskhelia’s late brilliance off the bench at Parc des Princes.
Chelsea nearly took an early lead when Joao Pedro missed a fourth-minute opportunity from a cross by Reece James. PSG responded quickly, going ahead six minutes later when Joao Neves headed down Ousmane Dembele’s cross for Bradley Barcola, who smashed a half-volley into the roof of the net.
Dembele soon rattled the woodwork with a shot that Filip Jorgensen managed to tip onto the frame of the goal. Chelsea equalised in the 28th minute when Enzo Fernandez set up Malo Gusto, whose low strike slipped past PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
Chelsea pushed for another before halftime, with Cole Palmer forcing a sharp save from Safonov. However, PSG struck again on the counter when Desire Doue released Dembele, who beat Wesley Fofana before firing into the bottom-left corner.
Chelsea levelled again in the 57th minute after Pedro Neto raced down the left flank and set up Fernandez to score. But a costly mistake by Jorgensen allowed Barcola to intercept and feed Kvaratskhelia, with Vitinha calmly lobbing the stranded goalkeeper in the 74th minute.
Chelsea briefly thought they had another goal when Joao Pedro finished from close range, but the effort was ruled offside. PSG then sealed the victory in dramatic fashion as Kvaratskhelia cut inside to blast a shot into the top-right corner before adding a stoppage-time finish from Achraf Hakimi’s cutback.
Barcola’s opener ended a long drought, marking his first Champions League goal since February 2025 against Stade Brestois 29. Kvaratskhelia has now contributed five goal involvements in his last five Champions League matches.
Doue also continued his impressive form, registering four goal involvements in his last three Champions League appearances. Earlier in the game, Fernandez became the first Chelsea player this season to both score and assist in a Champions League match.
Despite the defeat, Chelsea actually produced higher expected goals, finishing with 1.53 xG compared to PSG’s 0.87, but ultimately left the French capital empty-handed.
