World Cup: Five African stars lead race for FIFA young player award

Five African youngsters have emerged among the leading contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Young Player Award after playing key roles in helping their countries reach the Round of 32.

FIFA, in its latest assessment released on Tuesday, highlighted 11 standout players born on or after January 1, 2005, whose performances have strengthened their chances of winning the tournament’s Young Player Award.

Five of the 11 shortlisted players are Africans, highlighting the continent’s growing impact at the tournament.

Yan Diomande and Christ Inao Oulai (Côte d’Ivoire)

Diomande has been one of the tournament’s standout performers. The 19-year-old RB Leipzig forward recorded an assist in Côte d’Ivoire’s 2-0 win over Curaçao and became the only player this century to complete 10 dribbles and create 10 chances in his first three World Cup appearances.

His teammate, Christ Inao Oulai, also received praise for his influential midfield performances during Côte d’Ivoire’s qualification run.

Ibrahim Maza (Algeria)

Maza featured in all three group-stage matches for Algeria and was named Superior Player of the Match in the victory over Jordan that secured the team’s place in the knockout stage.

Ayyoub Bouaddi (Morocco)

Morocco’s 18-year-old midfielder impressed with his composure and ability to control play as the Atlas Lions advanced to the knockout rounds.

He also featured in Morocco’s victory over the Netherlands, recording two shots in 79 minutes.

Ibrahim Mbaye (Senegal)

Mbaye made history by becoming the youngest African player to score at a FIFA World Cup at 18 years and 143 days after finding the net against France earlier in the tournament.

European and South American talents have also made strong cases for the award.

Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsí (Spain)

Yamal played a crucial role in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, creating the winning goal despite intense marking, while Cubarsí has remained a key figure in Spain’s defence.

Kerim Alajbegovic (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder earned recognition after helping his country reach the knockout phase and became the eighth-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history during the group stage.

Rayan (Brazil)

The 19-year-old AFC Bournemouth winger became the youngest Brazilian since Pelé in 1958 to register a World Cup assist.

Johan Manzambi (Switzerland)

Manzambi scored and provided an assist in Switzerland’s 2-1 win over Canada, taking his tournament tally to three goals.

Luc De Fougerolles (Canada)

Despite limited professional experience, the young defender has impressed with his composure, technical ability, and physical presence. Across three matches, he recorded 18 defensive contributions and 12 clearances.

He also played 32 minutes in Canada’s 1-0 Round of 32 victory over South Africa, helping his country secure a place in the Round of 16.

The Young Player Award is presented to the most outstanding player born on or after January 1, 2005, at the FIFA World Cup.
