Monarch dies 11 months after ascending throne in Ondo

The Olojoda of Oda kingdom in Ondo State, Oba Julius Omomo has died at the age of 83.

The monarch’s death was confirmed by a family source, Ade Adelakun on Sunday.

Adelakun said the traditional ruler died on Saturday after a brief illness. He described Omomo as a “humble, decent and down-to-earth monarch”.

Adelakun said the monarch’s domain witnessed peace and development during his reign.

Omomo was installed monarch on May 30, 2023, and was crowned in December of same year. His ascension to the throne was met with litigation.

Members of the ruling house described his installation as illegal and an invitation to anarchy.

They said that the installation was not approved by the kingmakers and the people of the community.

Stakeholders said despite an appeal challenging Omomo’s nomination as monarch for the community, the state government approved his installation.

“The notice of Appeal was communicated to the state governor, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Chairman Akure South Local Government and the Ruling House,” members of the ruling house said in a statement at the time.

“Any step taken by the government would be prejudicial and might lead to a breakdown of law and order in the ancient community if the Omomo is installed as the traditional ruler.”

However, the state government said it was not served with any court injunction.
