  • NASA Launches Parker Solar Probe For Historic Mission To The Sun(Photos)

NASA has finally sent a spacecraft on a mission to fly where no probe has ever gone before; the sun’s scorching outer atmosphere.

The probe took off at 3.31 ET (8.31 BST) this morning. It was initially set to launch at 3.33am ET (8.33am BST) yesterday, but due to poor conditions, the launch time was moved.

The unmanned spacecraft is on an unprecedented quest that will take it straight through the edges of the corona, or outer solar atmosphere, just 3.8million miles from the sun’s surface.

Previously, the closest an aircraft had come to the sun was 27million miles.

Preparing to launch: The probe gets ready for take-off at T-minus one second this morning.

The $1.5billion (£1.17billion) Parker Probe will hit record-breaking speeds of up to 430,000 miles per hour as it completes 24 orbits of the sun over the course of seven years.

At this speed, it would take two minutes to travel from London to New York.

While orbiting the sun, the craft will swing around Venus seven times, using the planet’s gravity to push it closer and closer to our star with each pass; eventually, the Parker probe will get within 3.8 million miles of the sun’s surface.

It will make its first fly past Venus in October, and is protected by a revolutionary new heat shield.

That will set up the first solar encounter in November.

It will be subjected to temperatures of roughly 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit (1,371°C) when it comes closer to the sun than any spacecraft in history but, behind its thick heat shield, it will only feel like a hot summer day, with this sheltered region maxing out at about 85F (29C).

The NASA spacecraft taking off this morning.

This mission will require 55 times more energy than would be needed to reach Mars, according to NASA.

The probe will rely on a series of gravity assists from Venus to slow down its sideways motion, allowing it to get just 3.8 million miles away from the sun’s surface.

The historic mission will give us the best opportunity yet to study the star that holds up our entire solar system. And, it’s one of the last places within our stellar neighborhood that has yet to be explored.

Roughly 1,400 pounds of solar projection and science equipment are protected by an advanced heat shield, which uses a 4.5-inch thick carbon composite foam material between two carbon fiber face sheets.

The probe can be seen above as it was lifted onto the third stage rocket motor

  • Ekiti Assembly Rejects Election Result

    Ekiti Assembly Rejects Election Result

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has condemned and rejected the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election which produced Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress as governor. The house also adjourned legislative business until October 8, citing issues of harassment and insecurity.

The house which is dominated by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, by the resolution, will resume duties a week to the expiration of the tenure of the governor, Ayo Fayose.

House Leader, Akinyele Olatunji, condemned the alleged harassment of Governor Fayose, PDP leaders across the state and members of the state assembly by security personnel. He also said the adjournment of the house became imperative due to the political harassment of members by security agents.

Chairman House Committee on information, Samuel Omotoso, said the election of July 14 did not meet democratic standards. He said the election was marred by “outright brigandage, vote buying and falsification of results.”

The Deputy Whip of the Assembly, Ekundayo Akinleye, remarked that the outcome of the election showed Nigerians should not expect free and fair 2019 general elections as there were discrepancies in the final figures released by INEC.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Kola Oluwawole,  said figures were brazenly doubled to favour the declared winner and expressed confidence that the stolen mandate would soon be retrieved.

Deliberation on the poll led to the passage of an eighth-point resolution which stated that the election was heavily militarised with palpable fear on the faces of the electorate.

The House also held that there was ballot snatching by APC thugs, while PDP supporters were molested and chased out of polling booths and collation centres in open glare of security agents.

The lawmakers resolved that the result of the governorship election stood rejected by the House.

Taiwan based smartphone makers; HTC, has announced plans to sack 1500 staff members of their global workforce as revenue continues to dwindle.

As HTC’s market share continues to dwindle in recent years, the company in a bid to survive amid mounting competition from Apple, Samsung, LG and Chinese rivals; said it would cut 1,500 jobs in its manufacturing unit in Taiwan. This represents about a quarter of the 6,450 staff it employed globally as of June, data from the company shows.

“Today HTC announces plan to optimize the manufacturing organizations in Taiwan … This plan will allow more effective and flexible resource management going forward,” the company said in a statement made available to Reuters.

This massive layoff, follows a late last year $1.1 billion deal under which HTC lost 2,000 staff, mainly handset engineers to Alphabet’s Google, casting doubts over the company’s longer-term future.

Recall that earlier in February, HTC’s president Chialin Chang resigned due to the  numerous challenges facing the company.

As at 2013, HTC had over 19,000 staff , now they will be less than 5000.
