The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied the sack of its Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, describing the report as fake.
The purported sack report circulated wildly on social media on Wednesday. According to the report, the CBN Governor was sacked by President Muhammadu Buhari over his interest in the 2023 presidential election.
However, in a reaction to the viral reports, the apex bank’s spokesman, Osita Nwanisiobi said:, “I heard it just the way you got it too. As far as I am concerned, it’s a rumour, I’m not aware of any sack.”
Recall that the apex bank boss had on Monday, May 6 headed to a Federal High Court in Abuja to seek a constitutional interpretation on his non-resignation while pursuing his presidential interests.
Newsclickng.com also gathered that Emefiele is a registered member of ruling All Progressives Congress in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State.
Chairman of Ward 6 in the Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, Mr Nduka Erikpume confirmed to newsmen that the CBN governor had registered as an APC member.
When asked whether Emefiele had registered in the APC, Erikpume said, “Yes, he has registered since February 2021. He is our member.”
Meanwhile, condemnations have trailed Emefiele’s involvement in politics, with experts saying it could jeopardise the integrity of the country’s financial system.
But the CBN boss recently laughed off the anxiety associated with his presidential ambition ahead of the 2023 general elections, saying he is having fun.
Emefiele, who briefed journalists at the presidential villa after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday May 12, said, “There is no news but there will be news.”
When journalists inquired to know his views about the anxiety created by his ambition, the apex bank governor said: “Let them have a heart attack. It is good to have a heart attack. I am having a lot of fun.”
