N182bn debt judgment: Emefiele faces contempt charge

A contempt charge has been instituted against the governor of the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, over his alleged refusal to order payment of 182 billion naira to the Ogoni people.

The 182 billion naira it would be recalled was awarded against Shell petroleum, an Oil giant over the oil spillage accusation leveled against the company by a court of competent jurisdiction.

The matter is before Justice Taiwo Taiwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja.

In the contempt charge filed by the representative of the Ogoni people, Chief Lucious Nwosu, SAN prayed the federal high court in Abuja to commit Emefiele to prison for allegedly disregarding court order.

Although Emefiele was absent when the matter came upon on Wednesday, Nwosu expressed displeasure over the absence, saying the charge against him was semi criminal in nature and warranted his physical presence in court.

While responding, counsel to Emefiele, However Damian Dodo SAN, informed the court that his client will do the needful at the appropriate time.

In his own argument, Olawale Akani SAN, told the court that he had filed a motion praying for the dismissal of the contempt charge or in the alternative stay proceedings

Meanwhile, Justice Taiwo Taiwo, has adjourned the matter, till January 27, 2021.

The trial Judge then directed the CBN governor and other parties in the matter to obey court orders and appear on the adjourned date.
