Less than 48 hours after the North-East Governors’ Forum concluded its 11th meeting in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, suspected Boko Haram insurgents have reportedly launched an attack on the 27 Task Force Brigade stationed in Bunigari, within Gujba Local Government Area.

Residents of Bunigari told Channels Television that the assailants targeted the military base in the early hours of Saturday.

“It was around 1.00am when we heard intense gunfire from the direction of the 27 Task Force Brigade. It was clearly not the usual test firing by soldiers. We later learnt it was suspected insurgents,” said one resident.

A military source, speaking anonymously, confirmed the attack but noted that full details were still unclear at the time of the report.

In recent weeks, insurgents have attacked several military installations, destroyed a culvert along Goniri Road, and abducted travellers on the Damaturu–Bunigari–Biu route, instilling fear in nearby communities.

The assault comes shortly after the North-East governors convened to strategise on tackling the region’s persistent security challenges, which have plagued the area for over 15 years.
