A businessman, Mr. John Ugorji,owner of Johnny Supermarkets was on last week Friday abducted by gunmen at Ikenegbu within the Owerri metropolis, Imo State.
According to witnesses , Ugorji, after closing for the day at one of his supermarkets at about 9 30 pm at Ikenegbu, and in an attempt to enter his vehicle, was ambushed by the gunmen,who dragged him down from his vehicle and forcefully took him into their own waiting vehicle, shot sporadically before taking him away to an unknown destination.
Imo State Police Publlic Relations Officer ( PPRO), Mr Henry Okoye, said men of the command were already on the trail of the abductors and assured that the police would do their best to rescue the businessman.
Okoye said, “On June 30, at about 2.am, a distress call was received from a witness at Ikenegbu, Owerri Urban, that he saw armed men dragging a man out of his vehicle and taking him hostage.
“On the receipt of this information, operatives of the command’s anti-kidnapping squad, were swiftly marshaled to the scene. But unfortunately, the hoodlums had already escaped with the victim, highly suspected to be John Ugorji, before the arrival of our men, a vehicle suspected to be that of the victim was recovered and taken to the Station.
As at the time of filling this reportthe abductors were yet to make contact with the victim’s family.
