Gunmen on Friday abducted over 100 persons, mostly women and children in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Reports state that bandits attacked four villages—Mutumji, Sabongari Mahuta, Kwanar Dutsi, and Unguwar Kawo—all situated in the Maru Local Government Area. The attack was reportedly in retaliation for the communities’ failure to meet levies imposed by the bandits.

According to sources in Mutumji, the bandits invaded the community around 8 pm after evening prayers, firing shots indiscriminately and prompting residents to flee for safety.

Residents revealed that a key figure among the bandits, known as Damina, had enforced a “harvesting levy” of N110 million on these communities, giving them a two-week ultimatum to comply and pay.

Mutumji faced an N50 million levy, Kwanar Dutsi N30 million, Sabongari Mahuta N20 million, and Unguwar Kawo N10 million.”
