Unidentified gunmen believed to be members of a cult group have invaded a community in Rivers State and allegedly shot six people.

Reports indicate that two individuals, among the six shot, are feared dead.

The invasion by suspected cultists occurred in Ikem Community, situated in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, during the evening of January 2nd, marked by intense gunfire.

As of the latest available information, details about the invasion remain somewhat unclear, but it is known that the assailants targeted numerous individuals.

Two casualties are reportedly feared dead, while the conditions of the remaining four victims are described as critical.

According to reports within the community, efforts were made to seek police intervention, but the absence of security presence allowed the cultists to operate freely for over two hours.

The source said the cultists operated freely for over two hours and left freely in spite that a police Division stands 10 minutes away from the community.

The source said: “My Community Ikem Etche under Okehi Division is on fire cultists have invaded the place. Six persons shot, two in critical condition.”

However, the Public Relations Officer for the State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that the District Police Officer in the vicinity has been dispatched to the scene to assess the situation.

She mentioned that upon completing the visit, the DPO would provide details of the preliminary investigation.
