A middle-aged man named Sunday Odechukwu allegedly macheted his wife, Mrs Augustina Odechukwu, in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, causing serious injuries on her body.
The 40-year-old victim from Ebonyi State revealed that her husband, an Anambra State indigene, attacked her with a machete on Sunday at their home on Oda Road in Akure.
She stated that she and her husband had not communicated in over a year, and that he was no longer caring for her and their children.
According to the mother of five boys, her husband gave her and the children a quit notice, but she was unable to leave since she couldn’t afford to rent a room for herself and the children.
Mrs. Odechukwu claimed she had been lawfully married to her husband for almost 14 years, but he abruptly demanded that she and their children leave their house for no apparent reason.
“For almost a year, my husband and I have not lived as husband and woman. We’re just remaining under the same roof.
“On that tragic day, we were at home when my husband began hitting me and took a cutlass to kill me. I shielded myself with my left hand, thus I got major injuries on my right and left arms.
“I rushed out of the home nude, and he after me with the cutlass in his hand, but I was saved by a man who is a commissioner in the state, who ran towards my husband and took the cutlass from him as he was about to hack me on my side.
“The police later arrived and rushed me to the hospital, while he was arrested and taken away.”
“He told my children and me to leave the house for him. I’ve got five boys for him. One is fourteen years old, while the other is thirteen. The third child is 11 years old, the second is 8 years old, and the youngest is about to turn three.
Olamide Falana, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Gender Matters, responded to the occurrence by visiting the victim in the hospital and saying it was unfortunate.
