The Lagos State Police Command has detained three suspected cultists caught with a firearm and ammunition in the Owode-Ikorodu area of the state.
The Command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.
According to Hundeyin, the suspects were apprehended following actionable intelligence received about their activities.
“The apprehension and recovery followed a credible tip-off, which led to a well-coordinated, intelligence-led operation along the Owode-Ikorodu axis by one of the command’s tactical teams.
“During the operation, the suspects were found in possession of a locally made pistol and six live cartridges,” he said.
CSP Hundeyin disclosed that investigations identified the suspects as active members of a notorious cult group involved in violent crimes.
Further findings revealed that the suspects played significant roles in the transportation and distribution of illegal firearms throughout the state, posing a considerable threat to public safety.
Efforts are currently underway to track down other wanted members of the group.
The spokesperson assured that upon completing investigations, the suspects would face prosecution in line with due process and the rule of law.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance policy for cultism and criminal activities, emphasizing the importance of public safety.
Hundeyin also called on residents to assist the police by providing timely information, assuring that the command remains steadfast in its commitment to preserving peace across the state.
