The Adamawa State Police have nabbed Usman Ahmadu, a 53-year-old man, on charges of assaulting a mentally challenged minor.

Usman Ahmadu, reportedly originally from Maiduguri in Borno State, currently resides as an internally displaced person (IDP) in Saminaka, a community on the outskirts of Yola in Yola North Local Government Area.

Currently in custody under the state Police Command, Ahmadu has admitted to sexually assaulting a mentally challenged girl on four occasions, starting in 2021.

According to a statement from the state Police Command, which brought attention to the case, the Commissioner of Police, CP Afolabi Babatola, has directed a thorough investigation and prosecution of the matter.

Released on Thursday morning by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, the statement quoted CP Babatola assuring that there will be no refuge for criminals in Adamawa State.

The police statement did not specify the age of the assaulted minor.

Residents in the suspect’s vicinity, discussing the incident that led to his current police detention, expressed disapproval, highlighting the cruelty of his actions in targeting a vulnerable minor. They emphasized that he had been dependent on the goodwill of the Saminaka community as an internally displaced person (IDP) for several years.
