Police nab suspect for kidnapping, impregnating victim in Yobe

The Yobe State Police Force has arrested Auwalu Haruna for allegedly kidnapping a 20-year-old woman and using charms to impregnate her.

According to a press release by DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command’s spokesperson, a total of 34 cases related to gender-based violence were documented in the past six months, with an 85% conviction rate following trials.

“Recently, the command arrested Mallam Auwalu Haruna, a self-proclaimed Marabou, for alleged abduction, use of charms, and impregnating a 20-year-old woman”.

“Between January and June 2024, the command recorded 34 cases of GBV and related crimes, with 85% currently undergoing trial and a few convictions secured” the statement reads in part.

He further explained in the latest incident, “Tarmuwa Divisional Police Headquarters received a complaint from Alh Mohammed Kellu that his daughter was abducted by Mallam Auwalu Haruna on June 6, 2024. Following a thorough search, the victim was found in the suspect’s custody in Anguwan Arewa, Gaya LGA, Kano State”.

“Medical examination revealed that the victim was two months pregnant. The victim confessed that she was coerced into drinking a medicinal concoction, which rendered her unconscious and vulnerable to the perpetrator’s actions”

The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, appealed to parents, guardians, and community leaders to remain vigilant regarding the relationships their wards form, noting that perpetrators often include close relatives, neighbors, or acquaintances.

He urged stakeholders to unite in combating gender-based violence (GBV), emphasizing its significant impact on the well-being and overall development of girls and society.
