A student in their fourth year at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi has been apprehended on charges of possessing illegal firearms.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ahmed Wakil, announced on Wednesday that the arrest of the suspect occurred on Saturday following a tip-off from a vigilante group. The student was found in possession of an illegally acquired locally-made gun, a locally-made pistol, and 9mm live ammunition.

The suspect has confessed to the offense, asserting that the weapons belonged to another individual previously arrested for possessing a locally-made pistol in 2021.

Additionally, a 28-year-old business café operator in a Bauchi suburb has been apprehended for allegedly defrauding several ATBU students of N663,000, corresponding to their school registration fees.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect fraudulently collected the money and subsequently provided the victims with fake registration slips.

The police spokesman assured that both suspects would face charges after further investigations.
