[VIDEO] Police arrest man for allegedly setting wife ablaze in Kogi

The Kogi State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Jacob Irewa over the alleged attempted killing of his wife, Berida Irawo, at Oworo Estate, Felele, Lokoja.

The incident reportedly occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, following a domestic disagreement between the couple.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Salisu Afusat, the police received a report of the incident and immediately deployed officers to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

“On Friday, 14th August 2026, at about 2030 hours, the B Division Surveillance Team, Felele, received a report of the incident and immediately mobilised to the scene, where the suspect was arrested.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident followed a domestic disagreement after the victim burnt some of the suspect’s clothes which she believed he was no longer using, without his permission.

“The suspect subsequently threatened her, fetched petrol from his motorcycle and proceeded to set her ablaze,” she said.

The police spokesperson said the victim survived the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele.

Afusat added that the suspect allegedly admitted during questioning to setting his wife on fire.

“The suspect, in his statement to the Police, admitted to setting his wife ablaze. The Command has commenced a comprehensive investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and gather further evidence.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, condemned the incident and reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance stance towards violence, particularly domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to resolve domestic disputes through lawful means and avoid actions that could put lives at risk.

The police commissioner also said the suspect would be prosecuted after the completion of investigations.

“The Kogi State Police Command remains committed to protecting lives and property and ensuring that persons responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice,” the PPRO added.
