Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State on Friday destroyed illicit drugs worth N1 billion intercepted at various places within Kano city by the state Task Force on Drugs.
Ganduje said after setting the drugs ablaze at the NDLEA premises in Kano, that the exercise was a breakthrough in the administration’s war against sale and consumption of illicit drugs in the state.
The governor said that the state government had recently expanded the rehabilitation centre for victims of drug abuse in the state.
He urged groups and individuals in the state to support government’s efforts in fighting drug abuse to ensure a decent society.
Ganduje also called for the speedy trial and long jail term for drug peddlers in the country.
Earlier, the national coordinator of Ambassadors of Voices for Change Initiative, Mr Clem Ohameze commended the task force for the feat and pledged the organisation’s commitment to ensure drug free society.
He also commended the government for identifying with the needs and aspirations of the people by sanitising drugs business in the state.
Malam Hamza Umar, Commandant, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), restated the determination of the agency to make the state free of dangerous drugs.
