The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) on Tuesday said it would improve on the 2016 and 2017 record of 20 per cent reduction in road crashes.

The TRACE Corps Commander, `Seni Ogunyemi, made the assertion in an interview with newsmen in Ota, Ogun.

Ogunyemi said that though, the previous year’s record was on the positive side, TRACE was still not satisfied and would strive to achieve better level of reduction.

“We have put in place necessary machinery like strengthening our enlightenment campaign.

“We will ensure that motorists adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations.

“TRACE officials will collaborate with other sister agencies to ensure that lives and property are safe on the roads.

“We have started the registration and proper monitoring of all commercial drivers under the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).

“It also covers the motorcycle and tricycle operators as well as members of various unions,’’ he said.

According to him, already, we have public enlightenment department responsible for enlighten erring road users on traffic rules and regulations.

“We have written to the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) and other corporate organisations for training and retraining of their drivers, Ogunyemi said:

“We have also involved educational institutions, from primary to tertiary level, to train and retrain their drivers on proper use of the highways.

“We have not neglected the religious bodies- churches and mosques- to assist in preaching the importance of road safety to their members.”

He said that with the outlined template, TRACE was on its way to achieve improved record this year.
