The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has instructed its members to resume duties from Monday, 16 December 2024.

This directive comes following the conclusion of a two-week industrial action observed by the union from 2 December to 15 December 2024.

ASUP President, Shammah Kpanja, announced in a statement that the decision for polytechnic lecturers to return to work followed the warning strike, which had been prompted by the government’s failure, through its agencies, to implement nine items in the work plan jointly developed with ASUP to address unresolved trade disputes.

“During the strike, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment convened a conciliation meeting on 9 December 2024 between our Union and the government to resolve the dispute and avert an impending indefinite strike,” Kpanja stated.

“At the meeting, a new memorandum of understanding was signed, with the condition that another meeting would be held on 23 January 2025 to review compliance by all parties and address remaining issues.

“Following this meeting, the Union’s National Executive Council will convene to evaluate the situation.

“In light of this development, all members of the Union are directed to resume duties on Monday, 16 December 2024.

“We express our gratitude and commendation to our members for their commitment and resilience. It is our Union’s hope that the government will work diligently towards a productive resolution of the issues in dispute,” he concluded.
