Prof Femi Akinwumi, Chairman of the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board, stated on Wednesday that only 1,300 individuals were shortlisted to participate in the final interview out of over 11,000 applications who sat for the recruitment exams for teachers in public primary schools in the state.
Akinwumi stated that the recruitment aimed to replace current shortages for teachers in public elementary schools, and that the majority of successful candidates would be posted to remote regions to guarantee that qualified staff were available in all schools across the state.
According to a statement from his office, “only applicants who scored 45 percent or higher in the qualifying examination were shortlisted.”
He, however, said special consideration would be given to people living with disabilities among the candidates as well as candidates from communities with ‘hard-to-staff’ schools, saying the move would address the difficulty in providing staff for schools in difficult terrains and remote locations.
He said there was no room for compromise as “the examination was conducted according to global best practices to promote basic education and protect the future generations.”
