The salaries that were previously withheld from academics affiliated with the Academic Staff Union of Universities have commenced being disbursed by the Federal Government.

This was disclosed by Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, chairman of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology in Minna, who also affirmed that payments have begun to arrive.

In October 2023, President Bola Tinubu authorised the release of four of the eight months’ worth of ASUU salaries that had been withheld.

A ‘No Work, No Pay policy’ was implemented by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022, in response to the withholding of salaries during an eight-month strike by university-based unions.

Minister of Education Tahir Mamman recently declared a 35% salary increase for university employees.

Furthermore, he asserted that universities have been bestowed with autonomy subsequent to their elimination from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System.

Additionally, he mentioned that waivers are no longer mandatory for universities to conduct recruitment and vacancy filling.

According to Mamman, these resolutions were reached via informal consultations with tertiary institution unions.
