FUTMinna graduates 7,312 students, 187 bags first class

The Federal University of Technology (FUTMinna) in Niger State says one hundred and eighty-seven out of its 7,312 graduating students have bagged first-class degrees. 

According to Professor Farouk Kuta, the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology (FUTMinna), this information was shared during a press briefing in Minna, marking the 41st Founders’ Day and 31st and 32nd combined convocation scheduled for February 1st, 2024.

He mentioned that out of the 7,312 graduating students, 187 achieved first-class degrees. Additionally, 2,190 students are graduating with second-class upper division degrees, while 3,410 will receive second-class lower division degrees. Professor Kuta noted that 1,483 students will graduate with a third class, and 42 students will receive pass degrees.

Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor outlined various activities planned for the ceremony, which began on Friday, January 26, and will continue until February 1st.

These activities include Friday prayers and church services, the VC’s football competition, lectures, and the commissioning of four completed projects, among others.

He stated that the focus in the past two years has been on developing research competency and innovation, leading to the acquisition of significant funding, including over N844.5 million from the National Research Fund, five million Euros, and 800 million Euros for the European Commission grant UP-RISE and Erasmus Plus programs. Consequently, the university has successfully patented ten research products.

Furthermore, he highlighted the signing of numerous Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with both national and international universities and organizations, with some agreements renewed. These collaborations aim to enhance research knowledge and excellence. Under his administration, a total of 106 inaugural lectures have taken place since the university’s inception.

Professor Kuta commended the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for its various interventions, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining the standard of the country’s university system. He underscored the priority given to staff welfare by his administration to ensure a sustainable and high-quality workforce. Notably, 114 academic and non-academic staff members have benefited from foreign and local studies, among other initiatives. According to him, the university’s programs have received full accreditation.

Regarding the university’s current status, he mentioned a staff strength of 2,385 and a student population of 26,051. However, he expressed concern about the insufficient accommodation available for students.
