Kano State Government will build 5,000 houses for teachers in public primary and secondary schools, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has said.

He said the aim is to provide permanent accommodation for teachers and their families so that they do not become homeless after retirement.

Ganduje, speaking at the weekend at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House in Kano, said a scheme called ‘Teachers Reserved Area (TRA) is to be implemented by the government, Family Homes Funds and Federal Mortgage Bank.

He said 36 local governments in rural areas would have 100 housing units each.

The governor added that eight metropolitan councils would have 150 housing units each.  There are 44 local governments in Kano State.

Ganduje said the government would provide land and other basic facilities such as electricity, water and roads, while other aspects would be handled by the partners.

He said participation in the scheme, which will begin next month, is optional, noting that beneficiaries must pay for the houses, although in instalments.

“My administration is concerned about ensuring affordability and access to houses for teachers so that they don’t become destitute when they retire,”  Ganduje said.

A statement by the Government House Director-General, Media and Public Relations,  Ameen Yassar, said a technical committee, under the leadership of the state Policy Coordination and Policy Implementation Directorate, Alhaji Rabi’u Sulaiman Bichi, has been set up to fashion out modalities for smooth implementation of the teachers’ housing scheme.
