A lecturer in the Social Science Education Department at Prince Abubakar Audu University, Anyigba, Kogi state, identified as Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle has died during an alleged sexual encounter with a female student.
According to reports, the incident occurred while he was in a hotel room with Glory Ojochegbe Samuel, a student from the same department.
In a statement on Friday, Yahaya Alilu, registrar of the university, expressed sadness over Ibikunle’s death, describing it as a “tragic and disturbing occurrence”.
Alilu said the management is investigating the incident and urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information.
He said the university is aware of the public concern generated by the lecturer’s death and is cooperating with appropriate authorities to establish the facts.
“His sudden demise in company of Miss Glory Ojochegbe Samuel (24GE2034) of the same department is a tragic and disturbing occurrence that understandably generated public concern and interest,” the statement reads.
“The university wishes to state that the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle is currently under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
“We therefore kindly urge the public and the media to refrain from speculations or drawing premature conclusions until the facts are fully established.
“We are also aware of some unverified reports linking the names of other students including Miss Bello Yahaya Lubabat of the Department of Educational Administration and planning, to the incident.
“The university firmly dissociates Miss Bello and other students from the matter and cautions against the spread of unfounded information that may harm the reputation of innocent persons.”
William Ovye-Aya, spokesperson of the Kogi police command, said an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
Ovye-Aya said the incident was reported by the hotel manager, who said 22-year-old Gloria rushed to the reception to raise an alarm after the lecturer collapsed.
Ibikunle was taken to a hospital where he was confirmed dead by a doctor.
