Ogun Student, Maryam Idris wins Silver Award in Queen’s 2024 Commonwealth Essay Competition

A Junior Secondary School 3 student in Abeokuta, Ogun State,Maryam Idris, has clinched the Silver Award in the 2024 edition of Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.

The elated father of the Silver Award Winner, Mr Idris Katib said “this is a product of a long-term investment in my daughter and it also shows something significant in education of Ogun State ably led by Prince Dapo Abiodun.This is my second daughter to win the Commonwealth essay award,they received their education in Ogun State.

“Ogun State as the cradle of western education in Nigeria has always taken the lead. I congratulate my daughter and Ogun State on this feat “, he stressed.

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) is the world’s prestigious oldest international schools’ writing contest, established by the Society in 1883.

Her essay topic Essay Topic: You’re on a school exchange in a Commonwealth country different to your own. How do you make friends with people your age? (Consider similarities and differences in culture that may unite you) won her Silver Award in the competition for which over 34,000 students entered around the world.

Congratulating Idris, the organizers had earlier written as follows:

“We are delighted to inform you that your entry was given a Silver Award and am pleased to attach your printable award certificate.”

The certificate jointly signed by the Executive Chair, Royal Commonwealth Society, Dr Linda Yueh and two other lead judges, Femi Elufowoju and Caroline Haines adjudged Maryam Idris as Silver Award winner of the 2024 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.

An omnivorous reader and voracious writer, Idris has represented her school in several competitions and has led her competitive class in four out of six terms she has been in the school.

Asked about her interest and expectations from Commonwealth Award, Idris who wishes to study Computer Engineering after her college, seeks a full scholarship from her secondary up to the university level.

She looks up to winning more international laurels for Ogun State in the nearest future.
