Students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, have taken to the Ife-Ibadan expressway on Thursday to protest the closure of their schools due to the ongoing strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
This morning, the students who gathered at their campus gate marched to the major highway that connects commuters from Ife to Ibadan and vice versa.
According to reports, the students who gathered under the auspices of the Fund Education coalition vowed to continue their protests until the Federal Government met their demands.
The students held signs with inscriptions such as “Fund Education Now” and “Education is Not a Scam” while chanting “End ASUU Strike.” They appeared to be heading in the same direction towards a major roundabout, the well-known OUI roundabout at Oduduwa University in Ipetumodu.
The students were joined by some concerned members of the public.
Reports had it that the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, alongside the Minister for Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had invited the leadership of the Trade Union Congress to a meeting in Abuja today with regard to the ongoing strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
ASUU strike has entered 87 days today.
