The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) organisers have announced that Lagos, Nigeria will host the award’s tenth edition on May 10 and 11, 2024.
The AMVCA is an annual awards event that honours the technical and artistic achievements in the African film industry.
On Tuesday, during a press conference and media launch at the MultiChoice office in Ilupeju, Lagos, the award organisers revealed the schedule of events for the tenth edition.
May 10th is MTF & Digital Day, which is followed by Opening Night at the AMVCA. These events honour African entertainment features such as culture, music, fashion, and film production skills. However, the big day—the live AMVCA Awards event—is on May 11.
This year’s nominee list will be revealed on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at 8:00 PM Washington Standard Time.
The AMVCAs have had an indisputable impact on the film business throughout the continent, according to Busola Tejumola, Executive Head, Content & Channels, West Africa at MultiChoice, who was speaking about the event’s effects.
“Let me give you some numbers – since inception in 2013, the AMVCAs have injected over N623 billion into the film and television economy, N9 billion in awards events, training, and logistics, creating over 27 000 long & short-term jobs through the development of critical skills and honoring the industry stars,” she stated.
Speaking on the nominations for each category, the organisers said it is subjective to “specific criterias and processes” by the jury.
“The nominations of the AMVCA are determined by specific criterias and processes determined by the jury in conjunction with Delloite. Some of the key criterias taken into consideration for nominations include the eligibility period, categories, the submissions process and voting process,” said Femi Odugbemi, the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA.
The award ceremony this year has undergone a few alterations, as the organisers had already disclosed.
The award categories have been trimmed from 33 to 27, which is one of the significant modifications. It was stated that this was done in an effort “to meet global trends and standards.”
There will now be winners in 25 categories for the tenth AMVCA edition, including two special appreciation awards.
