Controversial crossdresser Idris Okuneye popularly known as Bobrisky is expected to be released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on August 5.
The social media star, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, was given a six-month prison sentence on April 12 by Lagos High Court Judge Abimbola Awogboro for naira abuse.
Awogboro also declared in her decision that there was no chance of a fine accompanying the sentencing. The judge ruled that the day of her arrest, March 24, marked the start of her jail sentence.
However, a prison source was cited by Punch on Wednesday as stating that “Bobrisky will be released on Monday, August 5.”
Ayo Olumofin, Bobrisky’s lawyer, also confirmed the development to the news outlet.
“Yes, it’s about that time for him to be released. There is nothing specific that would be done during his release. I might not go. I’m engaged outside Lagos. Maybe other lawyers will go,” he said.
Recall that, Bobrisky filed a notice of appeal disputing his conviction on a four-count allegation of Naira misuse.
In his Notice of Appeal, submitted by his lawyer, Bimbo Kusanu, Bobrisky requests that the court set aside the six-month incarceration sentence imposed on him and replace it with the option of a fine of N50,000 (Fifty Thousand Naira) on each of the counts against him.
On April 12, 2024, Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Bobrisky to six months in prison without the option of a fee for abusing Nigerian currency.
