Nigerian singer Burna Boy, who has won a Grammy Award, lost all seven of his nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The awards were held at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on October 3 and aired on Tuesday, October 10.
The artist known as the ‘African Giant’ faced disappointment in several categories at the awards ceremony. He lost the titles of Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, and Best Live Performer of the Year to American rapper Kendrick Lamar. Additionally, Burna Boy missed out on the Hustler of the Year award, which went to 50 Cent, and the Best Collaboration of the Year for his track ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, which was claimed by Lil Durk and J. Cole for their song ‘All My Life.’
Burna Boy also saw defeats in the Best Hip Hop Video category for ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage, losing to Lil Uzi Vert’s ‘Just Wanna Rock,’ and in the Song of the Year category, where the same song emerged victorious.
In contrast, Kendrick Lamar had a triumphant night, securing four awards. He dominated every category he was nominated in, winning Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director of the Year. He shared the Video Director of the Year award with his collaborator, Dave Free.
Ghanaian music sensation, Black Sherif, clinched the Best International Flow category, prevailing over competitors such as South Africa’s late AKA and K.O, France’s Gazo and Ninho, and the UK’s J Hus, Central Cee, and others.
