A federal high court in Abuja has scheduled a hearing for January 13 on Speed Darlington’s N300 million case against Kayode Egbetokun, the inspector-general of police.
While playing at an event in Owerri, Imo state, on November 27, Darlington was taken into custody. He was charged with cyberstalking Grammy winner Burna Boy.
Adeyanju and Stan Alieke, his attorneys, have called his ongoing detention “unjustifiable.”
Alieke shared on Instagram on December 23 that Darlington had been given bail by the court.
The judge ordered Darlington to be arraigned within 48 hours or released on bond, Adeyanju also wrote on X.
Adeyanju, however, claimed that the police had refused to free the singer in spite of the court order, while Alieke later disclosed that Darlington had never been arraigned.
According to NAN, Musa Liman, the judge, fixed the date after Abubakar Marshal, the singer’s counsel, sought an adjournment to enable Garba Audu, the IGP’s lawyer, to study and respond accordingly to the processes served on him in the open court.
Upon resumption of the court hearing on Monday, Marshal informed the judge that the case was set for the hearing of the originating motion on notice regarding the enforcement of Darlington’s fundamental rights.
Though Audu said he has yet to be served with the process, the court confirmed through the proof of service in its record that the police were duly served.
