Don’t punish children for speaking their mother tongue – Yul Edochie

Controversial actor, Yul Edochie has been spoken out on his opposition to punishing African youngsters for speaking their native tongues.

He underlined the value of teaching English for conversation on Instagram, but he also made it clear that it is inappropriate to discipline kids for using their mother tongue.

Edochie encouraged Africans to recover their culture, attributing this mentality to the legacy of colonialism.

He brought attention to the double standard by asking if other civilisations, such as the Chinese, would ever discourage their language.

“Yes, teach children English. It’s important for communication. But don’t flog them for speaking their mother tongue. That’s unacceptable. That’s slavery mentality which Oyibo people stuffed out brains with. Will a Chinese man or woman ever flog a Chinese child for speaking Chinese?

“Never make your fellow African feel inferior for being African. If we’re not proud of who we are as Africans & where we come from, we’ll never know where we’re headed,” he said.

Yul Edochie’s message aims to promote a positive shift in mindset, encouraging parents and educators to foster linguistic diversity and cultural pride.
