Emmy 2024 nominations: Full list of nominees for award

The Emmy award nominations announced on Wednesday showcased the dominance of the critically acclaimed drama series “Shogun,” earning an impressive 25 nods and immersing viewers in early 17th-century Japan.

Adapted from James Clavell’s historical fiction novel, the series has captivated audiences with its portrayal of the intricate and dangerous court politics of feudal Japan.

In the comedy category, “The Bear” set a new record with 23 nominations, surpassing “Only Murders in the Building,” which received 21 nods. In the limited or anthology series section, “True Detective: Night Country,” featuring Jodie Foster, led with 19 nominations.

The nominees were unveiled during a live-streamed ceremony from Los Angeles. Final-round voting for the 76th Emmy Awards will occur next month, with the ceremony scheduled for September 15.

“Shogun” has garnered widespread acclaim for its exceptional cast of Japanese heroes and villains, despite its heavy reliance on subtitles. Lead actress Anna Sawai and lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada, both nominees, expressed gratitude for the recognition. Sanada commented in an e-mailed statement to AFP, saying, “It was a great opportunity to share our culture with the world. I hope this will be a stepping stone for the next generation.”

While “Shogun” is a frontrunner across this year’s drama categories, it faces tough competition from Netflix’s final season of “The Crown” and Apple’s “The Morning Show,” starring Jennifer Aniston. Despite its numerous nominations, “Shogun” notably missed a nomination for Cosmo Jarvis, who portrayed the marooned English sailor pivotal to the show’s narrative.

With two more seasons already in development, “Shogun” continues to assert itself as a formidable contender in the television landscape, spotlighting Japan’s rich and complex history while pushing boundaries in the industry.
