Former Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) President, Emeka Rollas, has apologised to actress Regina Daniels and her husband, Ned Nwoko, over comments he made during their marital crisis last year.
In November, Rollas weighed in on the dispute between the actress and her husband, stating that Regina needed help.
He also claimed to have witnessed Nwoko, the senator representing Delta North, express concerns about Regina’s smoking habit. According to him, some of the incidents mentioned by the lawmaker occurred in his presence.
Rollas explained that his decision to speak publicly about the matter was driven by concern for Regina’s wellbeing and was not intended to mock, embarrass or bring her into disrepute.
He also expressed disappointment with Okey Bakassi, Charles Inojie, Chinyere Wilfred, Jide Kosoko and Sanni Danji, whom he said were aware of the situation but failed to speak out.
Rollas also tackled Rita Daniels, Regina’s mother, over the AGN leadership contest and commented on Nwoko’s role as chairman of the guild’s board of patrons.
But on Thursday, Rollas issued the apology in a post shared on his Instagram page, saying he regretted the timing and manner in which he addressed the matter.
“At the time, I believed strongly in the issues I raised and had my reasons for speaking. But today, looking back, I must honestly admit I regret the timing, the platform and the manner in which I handled it,” he wrote.
Rollas said the people he mentioned were individuals he had worked with and, in some cases, considered friends, and that his remarks came at a time when a family was going through a difficult period.
He also recalled a recent encounter with Rita, during which some people attempted to reconcile them, saying it gave him another opportunity to reflect on his actions.
The former AGN president thereafter extended his apology to all the persons mentioned in his outburst.
“So today, without excuses or conditions, I sincerely apologise: to Mrs Rita Daniels and the Daniels family. To Senator Prince Ned Nwoko and his family. To Regina Daniels,” he wrote.
“To the AGN Board of Trustees. And to Okey Bakassi, Charles Inojie, Chinyere Wilfred, Jide Kosoko, Sanni Danji, Agility, Nazareth Jesse, my former aides and every colleague whose name I mentioned. I am sorry.
“Whether or not anyone chooses to accept my apology is entirely their decision. I am making it because, after looking back, I am not proud of how I handled that moment.”
Rollas added that leadership required not only the courage to speak but also the humility to admit when a situation could have been handled differently.
“I may still hold my convictions about some of the issues I raised then, but I take responsibility for my actions and my timing,” he added.
“As I move forward, I choose peace, reconciliation, dignity and respect.
“I am human. I made a mistake. I have reflected. And today, I say sincerely: I am sorry.”
